#5 - Anse Source d’Argent, La Digue, Seychelles:
This 2-mile long beach featuring pink sand below towering granite cliffs is one of the most photographed beaches in the world. Protected by coral reefs, its turquoise water is calm and shallow – perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Beachfront hotels offer tranquil bungalows, regional music, authentic cuisine featuring local fish and seafood and palm wine made from fermented coconuts. The area offers lovely trails for walking or bicycling. Bikes are available at hotels and numerous rental shops and this is the most convenient means of transportation on the island.
#4 - Baia do Sancho, Fernando de Noronha, Brazil:
Located on the UNESCO world heritage island of Fernando de Noronha, this secluded, unspoiled beach features unique, brownish sand and emerald green water. It’s not easily accessible from above, but fortunately it can also be reached by boat. Visitors will enjoy sunbathing, snorkeling, diving, and surfing. From the months of February to June, an added attraction is two beautiful waterfalls created by rainwater cascading down from the cliffs into the sea. Accommodations on the island are mostly in privately owned bed-and-breakfasts called pousadas. There are no bars or restaurants on the beach itself, so come prepared with bottled water and a picnic lunch in your daypack.
#3 - Lanikai Beach, Kailua, Hawaii:
This beautiful, somewhat private beach features sparkling white sand bordered by palm trees and lush tropical plants. Its warm, calm surf is perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. Additional nearby attractions include hiking trails, ziplines and horseback riding. The beach can only be accessed by alleyways between residential homes and has no public facilities or lifeguards. The nearest accommodations are bed-and-breakfasts, rental beach houses and cottages, but there are a wide variety of hotels and restaurants a half-hour’s drive away in Honolulu. Lanikai bears simplicity with a chance to watch the moon rise over the world famous Mokulua Islands a mile offshore – a definite must-see for romantics!
#2 - Myrtle Beach, South Carolina:
Situated in the middle of a 60-mile stretch of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, Myrtle Beach is the ideal destination for a family vacation. Activities include fishing, parasailing, jet-skiing, surfing, body surfing, kayaking, and of course swimming and sunbathing. The oceanfront boardwalk and promenade offer a nostalgic carnival-like atmosphere. Specialty shops, amusement parks, golf courses, and a thriving night life add to the choice of activities. Accommodations are available at numerous hotels, as well as beach house and condo rentals, and nearby restaurants offer menus for every taste and budget.
#1 - Whitehaven Beach, Queensland, Australia:
Named 2010’s Top Eco-Friendly Beach by CNN.com, Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island boasts miles of white sand. This unique sand is 98% pure silica and doesn’t retain heat, making it comfortable for walking barefoot. It can, however, damage electronics such as cell phones and digital cameras (another reason to carry quality, protective luggage). The island can be reached by boat, seaplane or helicopter; many operators offer day trips or cruises on yachts or catamarans. Take advantage of nature at its best by visiting Hill Inlet, where the tide shifts sand and water to create a beautiful and unique fusion of colors, or by camping amidst vine forest and eucalyptus trees on the adjacent holiday park grounds.
