There are a lot of choices out there when it comes to choosing the right bag to carry your electronic gear. Ballistic nylon is a thick, tough, synthetic nylon fabric used for a variety of applications. Ballistic nylon was originally developed by the DuPont corporation as a material for jackets to be worn by World War II airmen. The term ballistic nylon takes its name from the fact that it was intended to protect the wearer from flying debris during the battle. Today the term is often used to refer to any nylon fabric that is made with a “ballistic weave”, typically a 2×2 or 2×3 basket weave. ECBC’s bags are woven from nylon yarns of 840 denier and 1680 denier. Denier refers to the weight, not the strength, of the fabric and the higher the denier, the more it is resistant to abrasion and tearing. For comparison purposes, many competitor packs are made with 300 denier or 420 denier, which would obviously result in a much less durable pack.
Kodra is an “air treated” Nylon fabric originally designed by Dupont, and later Kolon Intl of Korea introduced its own similar product. A characteristic of Kodra material is its tough and gleaming texture. The main advantages of this fabric is its tremendous abrasion resistance and the fact it is lightweight and ridiculously durable. This material is only used on very high end outdoor packs with prices generally starting at $300 and up. ECBC’s K7 line is made of 1000 denier Kodra material and is priced at $140 and under, depending upon the size and style of the bag.
